Miley Cyrus: My life has no labels now

Miley Cyrus felt a pressure to label herself until she began to understand the notion of sexual fluidity.

The Wrecking Ball singer has been very open about her sexuality in recent months, describing herself as pan-sexual and enjoying romances with Patrick Schwarzenegger and model Stella Maxwell. Miley hasn't always found it as easy to explain her orientation but spending time with the LGBT community and the LGBT Center in Los Angeles helped her on her path to self-discovery.

"(Being) given the opportunity to sit in one of the support groups, I walked away with a feeling of self-love that I have never been able to even give myself before," she said as she was honoured at the Los Angeles LGBT Center's 46th Anniversary Gala on Saturday (07Nov15). "Because, you know my life until that point, I was subconsciously convinced that I had to label myself. Because everything in our life has to have a name. Everything in our life is something but I'm not a thing. We're not a thing. We're humans with feelings that change just like this weather — which we've gotta do something about, and I'm not alone."

Since her first visit, Miley has worked tirelessly to raise awareness and promote the LGBT community and was honoured at the gala with the Vanguard Award for her work with Happy Hippie and the Los Angeles LGBT Center. But as well as helping others, her increased knowledge has helped her understand herself so much more.

"I was so moved when I first heard someone sitting beside me say, 'Some days I wake up and I'm the masculine version of myself and some days I wake up and I'm the feminine version of myself,'" she continued. "And that's totally okay. And the LGBT Center had the key to the lock on my cage and they set me free."
