The NFL has eyed up Coldplay, Rihanna and Katy Perry for the half-time Super Bowl show next, but they'll have to pay for the privilege.
The TV slot which was filled by Bruno Mars and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers back in February, is one of the most sought after of the year. It pulls in around 114 million viewers for each iteration and has featured guests all the way from Madonna and M.I.A. to Michael Jackson and New Kids On The Block.
According to reports from Wall Street Journal, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Rihanna have been selected, but seizing the slot depends totally on whether they are willing to shell out.
“In a twist this year, the league has asked artists under consideration for the high-profile gig to pay to play,” writes the WSJ.
Unsurprisingly, it's safe to say that the response from artists has been meagre at best. Apparently NFL employess have “asked at least some of the acts if they would be willing to contribute a portion of their post-Super Bowl tour income to the league, or if they would make some other type of financial contribution, in exchange for the halftime gig.”
This may put a dampener on the possibility of Weird Al playing the show, at least not without a hefty kickstarter campaign from fans.
