Nirvana have been revealed as the best selling band at Record Store Day 2014.
The band topped the list of best selling singles with their limited edition 'Pennyroyal Tea' release, while the Flaming Lips & Devo's 'Gates of Steel' was the second biggest seller and The Cure and Dinosaur Jr's 'Just Like Heaven' third. The rankings come from Nielsen Soundscan and Border City Media's BuzzAngle Music.
As for albums, Tame Impala's Live Versions, Grateful Dead's Live at Hampton Coliseum and Joy Division's An Ideal for Living completed the top three best selling LPs. However Nielsen's listings do appear different to Billboard's in both the album and singles list.
Of the twenty releases listed in the top ten singles and albums chart, only one was not a Record Store Day release, which was Afghan Wings' Do To The Beast. Also Soundscan states that of the top 50, 43 releases were exclusives pressed especially for the day. 68 albums sold more than 1,000 copies each and vinyl single sales rose 3,100%. This also meant it was the most successful Record Store Day ever, up 36% from last year.
