When our ancestors look back at the year that was 2012, it'll be pretty clear that it belonged to One Direction. From the minute they came Stateside at the top of the year, American girls went bananas for these five lads hailing from England and Ireland. Their catchy tunes have helped make them global superstars — and landed them at #1 on MTV's Best Artists of 2012 list.
And, what a year it's been for 1D. They've had not one, but two chart-topping albums (their latest is Take Me Home), toured the globe, won 3 VMAs and even helped make pal, Ed Sheeran, a household name. And, that's only a small list of the achievements they've amassed since dropping their debut album, Up All Night, back in March to now.
"MTV, we cannot thank you enough. Artist of the Year, it is an absolute honor," Louis Tomlinson shared, with his four bandmates by his side. "We've had an amazing year and this is the icing on the cake, so thank you so much."
"We want to thank you, MTV, for all your support," Harry Styles added about the honor, where they beat out the likes of more established artists like Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna, to name a few. "You've supported us from very early on. And a massive 'thank you' to all the fans. This wouldn't be possible without you, so thank you once again. This is amazing and we'll see you soon."
Earlier this week their track, "What Makes You Beautiful," landed at #4 on MTV'sBest Songs of 2012 list thanks to its infectious melody and swoonworthy sentiments.
While 2012 was jam-packed, 2013 is also proving to be quite a year for the guys even before it happens. They will kick off their world tour in February, already have their video for "Kiss You" banked, are working on their 3-D film (being helmed by Morgan Spurlock), and will soon give Justin Bieber a run for his money when they release a perfume next fall. It seems like there's almost nothing these guys can't do.
Give your congratulations to 1D in the comments!
