With the competition in the Olympics under way and the opening ceremony out of the way, fans are now focused on not only who will take home medals at the games but also who will take the stage at the splashy closing ceremony on August 12.
While no one officially has been announced or confirmed for the closing ceremony, the chatter that British chart-toppers One Direction will perform is getting louder and louder. According to a report in U.K. newspaper The Daily Mirror, the fivesome are most definitely going to take the stage, although a rep for the band refused to comment on the rumors. The group will reportedly be joined by their pal Ed Sheeran.
When MTV News spoke to Sheeran last week while he was in New York City, he couldn't confirm or deny his involvement in the London show.
"I was told not to say anything about that, and then as soon as I was told not to say anything about that, it was in The Daily Mail the next day. It was a bit odd," he explained. "The closing ceremony, there were rumors I am playing the closing ceremony. Those rumors may or may not be true.
"If I was to play the closing ceremony, I might be playing with quite a big rock band and I might be playing one of their most famous hits. Might be. And if I was doing that, it would feel quite fun, I think," Sheeran further teased. "And it would be quite a moment for me. But that's if I was doing it."
Ed and the 1D boys aren't the only major British acts expected to play the show. The Who, Take That and the Spice Girls are also rumored to be performers.
In a previous report, sources told The Daily Star that 1D would be the perfect fit to play the closing ceremony. "The main theme of the Olympic closing ceremony will be celebrating the best of British music, so it's only right that One Direction are opening the show," a source said. "They are the U.K.'s biggest music ¬export at the moment behind Adele, who is also ¬rumored to be involved in some way. It's all top secret and the boys aren't allowed to talk about it but they are thrilled."
