LOS ANGELES — Directioners, this is what makes you beautiful.
After a heated battle, One Direction walked away with their first Moonman at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards: Most Share-Worthy Video.
Your votes continued to count until the very end of the VMAs pre-show when One Direction was announced as the winner of the fan-decided award. The final count was just under 28 million votes for the boys of 1D, putting them close to 1.5 million votes over Justin Bieber and his "Boyfriend" video.
Directioners and Beliebers showed up in full force for this award, putting followers of Beyoncé, Carly Rae Jepsen and Gotye to shame. While both Bieber and One Direction racked up more than 54 million votes cumulatively, while Beyonce came in third with only163,000, Carly Rae got 67,000 and Gotye got 52,000. Those three groups of fans had better shape up in case this award is brought back next year, because those nominated artists did not stand a chance!
The British boy band also took home the award for Best Pop Video for "What Makes You Beautiful," and they have a chance to win a third Moonman in the Best New Artist category. They'll then be performing later tonight and, based on what dreamboat Liam Payne told us, it's going to be one of their best shows ever.
"I think performing at the VMAs is such a huge occasion. Like, we're really looking forward to it, and I think it ranks up there with one of the best performances we'll do so far," he said. "It's quite nerve-racking because obviously there have been so many historical moments and stuff that have happened at the VMAs. We want to make a moment ourselves, but who knows."
