The 'Arthur' actor had a reputation as a bad boy and lothario before marrying pop singer Katy last October, and admits he felt ready to settle down.
When told he appeared tamed, Russell, 35, told Redbook magazine: ' think I was ready for it. If you're wild, like a wild animal, marriage won't contain you.
' think that's how a lot of people get into trouble. It's sort of like someone who isn't toilet-trained - this is the kind of thing that will compromise most marriages.'
The British funnyman also admitted his attitude mirrors that of his titular character in 'Arthur' in that he would be prepared to give up his riches for his partner.
He explained: ' would never give up love; I'd definitely give up money.
'Now that I'm married, I have this great love and partnership in my life that is the most important thing to me.
'And I'm discovering how lovely permanence and building an ongoing relationship can be, rather than always thinking, what's next?'
'Arthur' is released in the US and UK in April.
