Russell Brand has filed a divorce petition to dissolve his marriage with wife Katy Perry.
The couple wed in India in a Hindu ceremony in October 2010.
Russell filed the divorce papers in Los Angeles just 14 months after their union citing "irreconcilable differences" as the cause for their split.
The 36-year-old comedian does not want his relationship with Katy to end bitterly.
"Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage," Russell said in a statement released to TMZ. "I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends."
The Teenage Dream songstress and Russell reportedly had a big row over the Christmas holidays.
The pair spent Christmas Day apart after the fight, as Katy decided to celebrate the holiday in Hawaii, while Russell was back in the UK with his friends.
Neither Russell nor Katy have been wearing their wedding bands out in public this week.
Earlier this month Russell appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres show to discuss break-up rumours.
"There are always rumours, aren't there? I've treated the whole Internet now like it's a wicked little liar," Russell told Ellen on the show. "Yeah. I am really happily married. I'm married to Katy. Perpetually, until death do us part was the pledge."
Katy or her representatives have not yet commented on the impending annulment.
