If it seems like they don't make records like they used to, The O'Jays agree. Singer Eddie Levert says the recording process is more hurried than it used to be. He says he would like to live with songs for a while and figure out the nuances, but the producers of their new record handed them songs and wanted to record them right away.
As he puts it, "They're jumping on it right from Jump Street." The O'Jays fought to do it their way. Bandmate Walter Williams says when everything about the song is already laid out, including the key, then that's not good. He says he wants to know what his instrument -- his voice -- can do for the song.
