Rough Trade Records will be releasing it's first ever download only single on December 20th. 'Jellybones' by The Unicorns is taken from their startling debut album 'Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone?'
The Unicorns hail from Montreal, a city resembling nothing more than fin de siecle Paris, albeit with more snow. Formed in 2003 by Nick “Niel†Diamonds - everything except drums, Alden Ginger, the reverse namesake of Elvis Presley's last squeeze; who had the singular pleasure of discovering the King,, face down/arse up in the throne room - everything but drums, and J'aime Tambour â€" drums, the trio share a fondness for pink shirts and trousers, dubious medical terminology, and most surprisingly of all, great pop songs.
At times they sound to us like The Residents playing the songs of the Beach Boys and Black Sabbath, with Jerry Dammers on keyboards and Joe Meek at the controls. Brilliantly disguised pop songs, but pop songs none the less.
It would be ambitious to claim that no prohibited chemicals were consumed during the construction of this track â€" there are occasions when the whole thing threatens to tip over the edge, sounding like a christmas concert in a hospital for the criminally insane. The fact that it never loses it's sharp sense of intelligence and remains firmly planted on the right side of self indulgence makes it a joyous listening experience.
Unicorns as everybody knows, are the mythical equine creatures of legend. Sleek, horned beasts, formidable and fearless in battle yet placid and serene when tamed by a virgin's touch. What better metaphor could there be for a Rock'n'roll band? As with other endangered magical species, Unicorns were often hunted by barbaric tribes intent on getting the horn, which was thought to ward off stomach upsets and epilepsy.
The Unicorns are Nick “Niel†Diamonds, Alden Ginger, and J'aime Tambour.
