Track Review: Coldplay, 'Paradise'

Boiling strings, rattling synthesizers, bass-heavy beats -- has Coldplay made a Kanye West record? Not exactly, but "Paradise," the new single from their upcoming fifth studio album, "Mylo Xyloto," does bring a few new tricks to the table. For the lightweight chorus, Chris Martin dangles the title word ("Para-para-paradise") like a squirming fish on a hook. The rest of the words are not much more descriptive - Martin sings about a girl wanting to escape into her own dreams amidst a bleak landscape -- but Coldplay's main appeal has never been within the band's lyrical content. Musically, "Paradise" suggests a massive budget, with Will Champion's hard-hitting percussion sounding particularly lavish. Rock fans that couldn't get behind Viva La Vida probably won't appreciate "Paradise," but the track is another slice of warm-hug ecstasy for fans who have been onboard since "Yellow."
