Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor is inviting fans to download his band's new single, "Only," and to remix or alter it any way they choose.
He did a similar experiment with NIN's previous single, "The Hand That Feeds," limited to Apple's Garageband audio format. "I've enjoyed and cringed at what you've done with my song," Reznor said in a message on http://www.NIN.com. "Thank you (I think)."
This time he has opened it up to both Mac and PC users by posting the track in Ableton Live, Digidesign Pro Tools LE and Sony Acid Xpress/Pro in addition to Garageband.
"This has been a great avenue for Nine Inch Nails to connect with fans," said Courtney Holt, Interscope Records head of new media and strategic marketing.
"After 'The Hand That Feeds' received such a tremendous response, Trent and his fans wanted more. But he wanted it even bigger and broader."
Participants had created their own sites for the original remix experience, but this time Interscope partnered with MySpace.com to create an online community site for people to upload their remixes, vote for their favorites and comment about their experiences in a blog.
"There is no agenda here other than for you to explore, experiment and have fun with it," Reznor said.
Opening the download file requires agreeing to a license that preserves all of the original rights.
Both remixable tracks are taken from NIN's "With Teeth" (Nothing/Interscope), which has sold 580,000 copies after recently debuting at No. 1 on the U.S. pop charts.document.write(unescape("
