Trinidad James is hot, but don't take our word for it: Ask the gang of record labels looking to sign the Atlanta rap rookie — not that the "All Gold Everything" rapper would reveal his list of callers when he appeared on Wednesday's "RapFix Live."
"With them labels, man, they're just doing their job — all of 'em. I feel like I've done talked to all of 'em, I probably have," Trinidad said the day after performing his first show in New York.
Not much was known about James before he dropped his Motion Family-directed video in October. The clip, in which James wears a leopard-print open shirt and rides a solid-gold bicycle, has amassed more than 1 million views on YouTube and more than 6 million views on World Star Hip Hop ever since its release in January. Rick Ross once brought him out onstage, and Outkast's Big Boi called him "real, soul Atlanta." So of course every high-powered hip-hop label is looking to get a piece.
"When you doing something that make sense, no matter how many people hate it, but you got enough people loving it, the labels, they gonna jump on it," James said. "That's what they do. They're just doing their job. I ain't mad at 'em."
Still, the upstart wouldn't reveal who was ringing his phone exactly. So instead, Sway played a little game and just started to throw label names out there to try and get a reaction.
Interscope: "Man, maaaaaan. Bruh, bruh, c'mon."
RCA: "Cool, cool."
MMG: "Real, real, real deal Holyfield."
Def Jam: "Historic, historic, a lot of respect."
Right now, James — who is also promoting his mixtape Don't Be S.A.F.E. — is focused on building his brand and putting gas into his own Gold Gang record label. The way he figures it, Russell Simmons had to start from somewhere before he built Def Jam.
"Somebody had to want to be the man. Somebody had to want to start something. For me, I'm looking at it like, 'Why I can't be the man? Why not? Who's to tell me I can't be the man?' " he asked rhetorically.
"It's really hard for a label to impress the artist, per se, because I'm just so focused on being my own man," he continued. "Man, show me something, like something for real."
