Trinidad James Says No New Car For Him After Signing Def Jam Deal

Don't let his "All Gold Everything" mantra fool ya: Trinidad James isn't all about flash. Trini is focused, and not even his newly inked record deal with Def Jam was enough to deter him from his mission. In fact, the Atlanta rap rookie didn't even take time out to celebrate.

"Man, to be honest with you, I was in L.A., I'm still in L.A., and I just dapped up my people that were around me, like, 'Keep workin',' " James told on Friday while he was backstage at Power 106's annual Cali Christmas concert. "I didn't do anything, bruh."

It was announced on Thursday that James signed a joint venture deal with the historic hip-hop label, and though no sources would confirm it, the contract is said to be worth $2 million. The next day MTV News caught up with Trinidad to see how life has changed for him and whether he treated himself to something nice for a job well done. "Don't get me wrong, I'm happy, but I'm just not the type of guy to be like, 'Oh, ahh, let's go buy a Maserati.' Nah, I'm not that guy," he said.

It's only been two months, but since dropping his "All Gold Everything" single and debut mixtape, Don't Be S.A.F.E., in October, James has emerged as rap's most sought-after unsigned talent. That was until Def Jam pulled the trigger on the deal last week, beating out offers from a number of other labels.

When he appeared on the December 5 episode of "RapFix Live," James maintained that he was looking to be impressed by whichever label he would sign to. "It's really hard for a label to impress the artist, per se, because I'm just so focused on being my own man," he said.

When MTV News correspondent and "RapFix Live" host Sway Calloway asked the 25-year-old about Def Jam, he played coy but hinted that the label was a front-runner in the Trinidad James sweepstakes. "Historic, historic, a lot of respect," he said, describing what would become his new recording home.
