Real Spit: If you couldn't tell from his Sex Tape Chronicles Vol. 1 & 2,Verse Simmonds is super passionate about music and women. The singer, songwriter and sometimes rapper once again does what he does best on Sex Love & Hip-Hop.
"This mixtape right here is really important for me because it's my third mixtape coming out of the Sex Tape Chronicles mixtapes that I was putting out," Verse tells Mixtape Daily of his latest tape, which he dropped with DJ Drama in April. "I think it's my biggest mixtape. Took a little bit of time for me to put together, but it's finally perfect and I know everybody gonna love it."
Sex Love & Hip-Hop is a pretty big deal, as it features contributions from Snoop Dogg, Akon, Musiq Soulchild, 2 Chainz, Kelly Rowland and hit-producer Sham "Sak Pase" Joseph. The tape starts off slow and sensual with "Talk That." On the slow-rolling track, Verse sets the tone whispering sweet nothings, reassuring a nervous lover before he gets nasty on the hook.
While Verse is primarily an R&B artist, he is no one-trick pony. On "Bad Mutha" he teams with Snoop Dogg and drops auto-tuned rap bars over a Bay-inspired beat provided by Mel & Mus. Simmond's rap love affair continues on his "Boo Thang" remix. The original "Boo Thang" was a debut with Verse and Destiny Child's Kelly Rowland, but on the updated version he adds 2 Chainz and Yo Gotti. Akon assists on "Keep It 100," where Verse spits about his healthy sexual appetite: "Two girls ain't too many/ Three girls? Yeah that's plenty."
With Sex Love & Hip-Hop, Verse adds to his already impressive resumé and shows a great deal of versatility in the process. Though the tape is an Internet freebee, there are no throwaways. If this is just a warm-up, we could only imagine what the album will sound like.
Joints to Check For
» "Bad Mutha" — "It's actually my single right now, I'm really proud of this record. It has a real west coast feel to it and a down south bottom to it. I think everybody gonna really love this record and we got the big homey Snoop Dogg on it, so you can't go wrong with that."
» "Best Sex Eva" — "I think it's one of the songs on the mixtape that's definitely gonna be a favorite of everybody, especially the females."
» "Who Do You Love" — I really like this record because it's featuring two of my favorite artists, Musiq Soulchild and Planet VI. It's a real special record to me because we all actually got in the studio and produced and wrote it together. It came out really dope."
