This week, America decided that neither Lyric 145 nor Jennel Garcia have the "X Factor" as both sets of contestants were sent home on Thursday night.
During a divas-themed episode the night before, ahead of saying goodbye, each took the stage to mixed results from the judges. Garcia went for a judge-pleasing rendition of Tina Turner's "Proud Mary," while rap group Lyric 145 confounded the mentors with their mash-up of Queen's "We Will Rock You" and Katy Perry's "E.T."
Neither performance, however, was enough to put them through to next week, much to the dismay of each contestant. Lyric 145 blame their low rank and eventual dismissal on last-minute shake-ups.
"Us not being able to do the song we originally prepared definitely, probably took an effect on what happened today. I feel like if we would have done our original lyrics and did the song that we wanted to do, I don't think this would have happened today," Lyric Da Queen told after learning of the group's fate. "Everything's very spur-of-the-moment, it was a lot of pressure, it just definitely wasn't the route we was planning on taking."
She continued, "But, since it happened, all you can do is take it. Take the good and the bad and appreciate the experience. I don't believe in coincidences. Everything happens for a reason and now we can really have the open gate to show the world what we can do."
What does she think could have saved the trio? Well, the chance to do one final song on Thursday. She added, "If we would have been able to do that 'save me' song, we would have been saved, that's for sure."
Garcia did get the chance at a final performance, opting for Hoobastank's "The Reason," but it still wasn't enough to keep her around, despite mentor Demi Lovato pulling for her last minute.
"I was very surprised too. I think that Paige [Thomas] and I and Fifth Harmony are all brilliant acts in this competition, so I was really surprised but everything happens for a reason," she said. "I'm looking forward to realizing what that reason is. Everything I talk to Demi about is very confidential and I'm gonna keep it to myself cause it's personal. But it meant so much to me that she chose me tonight. It meant so much."
She added, "I might have stuck up for the song choices this week a little bit more, but you know I wanted to trust Demi and I did and I still do and she chose that song for me and I tried my best and that's all you can do."
