"We've Only Just Begun" is a song from Paul Williams' 1971 album, Just an Old Fashioned Love Song. A breakthrough hit single for the Carpenters in 1970, it is one of Williams and Nichols' most well-known songs, to the point where it has become a standard selection for weddings. Williams' album version is decidedly sparse and low-key compared to that of the Carpenters; however, he would choose their instrumentation for his re-recording of the song for the 2005 album I'm Going Back There Someday. "We've Only Just Begun" was originally commissioned by the now-defunct Crocker National Bank for use in a commercial; Williams performed lead vocals on the commercial version. The commercial caught the eye of Richard Carpenter, who met with Williams to inquire about recording it for the Carpenters. At the time, the song was unfinished, lacking both a bridge and a third verse, forcing Williams to lie in order to secure the deal. The song was completed shortly thereafter, making Williams/Nichols the most sought-after songwriting team in America.
