Adam Ant talks about manic depression

British pop star Adam Ant has spoken of his struggle with manic depression.

The 80s icon has long battled bi-polar disorder, and in 2002 he was admitted to a London psychiatric ward under the Mental Health Act.

It was later revealed he checked into the facility after being accused of pulling out a gun at the Prince of Wales pub in Kentish Town.

The 51-year-old, real name Stuart Goddard, told Time Out it was a long time before he had a clear understanding of what was wrong with him.

"I was dimly aware of mental illness - my stepmother, my father's second wife, had schizophrenia, but most people in my condition are unaware of what exactly is wrong with them," he said.

"I would just be feeling really up one minute and down the next. You tend to withdraw into yourself and become paranoid. You build up things in your mind that aren't there but you think they are."

The star says he has been working on his health ever since.

The former superstar - who is currently promoting his autobiography, Adam Ant: Stand And Deliver - The Autobiography, shot to fame in the 1980s with his band Adam and The Ants.
