Cheryl Cole made a furious phone call to footballer husband Ashley Cole upon hearing about his arrest.
After giving him a verbal on her mobile phone from her climb up Mount Kilimanjaro, she reportedly collapsed from the stress.
The Girls Aloud star - who is currently climbing the African mountain for
British charity Comic Relief - broke down when she heard of the Chelsea star's alcohol-fuelled bust up with police yesterday (05.03.09).
She called him from 16,000ft and shouted at him for disgracing himself by being arrested for being drunk and disorderly.
She was also angry that he had broken a solemn promise not to go out boozing with his teammates while she was away.
A friend said: "This is the last thing she needed. The cheating allegations last year almost ended their relationship.
"It only survived because Ashley agreed not to go out boozing with his teammates, who Cheryl thinks are a bad influence on him.
"She was never very keen on Ashley going out with footballers because of all the attention they inevitably get from women.
"That deal had been intact ever since – up until Wednesday night. Cheryl even reminded him of it before going away to Africa.
"It's the last thing she needed when she has to have all her mental strength to get through the next few days. She was really low in the morning but the rest of the team tried to cheer her up."
Ashley, 28, was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly following a row with police outside London nightclub Collection, in the early hours of Thursday morning.
He held in police cells until 5.30am, was given an £80 fixed-penalty notice and was also fined £160,000 by Chelsea, for bringing the club's name into disrepute.
He has since issued an apology to the arresting officers, saying: "I regret my actions and how it reflects on myself and Chelsea football club.
"However, I want to make it clear I swore in frustration at the paparazzi's behaviour.
I would never disrespect police officers in any way."
