The No Doubt singer - who has sons Kingston, five, and two-year-old Zuma with husband Gavin Rossdale - is constantly surrounded by men and admits she struggles to find the time to keep up with the friendships she does have.
She said: "I'm surrounded by men. It's really weird, I don't know how it happened. I don't think about it a lot but I do notice it when the only girlfriends I've ever really had are the girlfriends of the guys in the band.
"Thankfully they chose good girls to go out with. They hate me sometimes because I don't have the time. I'm like, 'I'm sorry, I have to see my son today,' so it can be really hard."
Gwen joined the band at a time when there were few prominent female stars in rock but she doesn't think her gender was ever really a problem.
She said: "There were no girls in rock bands in the US at the time. The only other girls were folky like Jewel or L7 who were like, grungy and raaaaargh. So I was sort of somewhere in between.
"I did think about those things. On stage guys would shout, 'Get your t*ts out.' And I'd be like, 'What t*ts?' It didn't matter.
"I don't know why but we could get people going and just had this confidence."
