Hunter Hayes has become one of the biggest breakout country artist of the year. His self-titled debut album and hit "Wanted" catapulted him from aspiring singer to country star, but there's a good chance this star could become even brighter.
Hayes is up for three big Grammy Awards this Sunday: Best Country Solo Performance, Best Country Album and one of the most coveted prizes of the night: Best New Artist.
Earlier this week the country crossover star stopped by MTV News for "Live in the Newsroom: Hunter Hayes," where he performed two songs and sat down for an interview.
During the extended chat, we decided to get to know Hayes a little better by using some of his song titles from his hit debut album. Check out the video to see all his answers!
"Somebody's Heartbreak"
In Hayes' single "Somebody's Heartbreak," which he performed acoustically during his visit with MTV News, the country cutie sings about taking a chance on a girl whom he knows could break his heart, something he admits he's all too familiar with.
"Oh yeah. Who hasn't?" Hayes said when asked if he's had his heart broken. "If you haven't, then you haven't lived. It was terrible, but you have to have that happen. And it's going to keep happening so get used to it. It's a part of life; you learn from it."
"If You Told Me To"
The mid-tempo "If You Told Me To" has Hayes singing about doing anything and everything for a special someone, but only if he is asked to do so. However, Hayes has limits of what he would do for love.
"Compromise who I am," Hayes says of what he would never do in a relationship. "You know how you start changing for someone and then you back off? And it's like, it's not right. As much as I want this to work out and every relationship, it requires compromise. You have to work with it. You have to make it work, but there are certain points that you're changing so much about yourself that you're not yourself anymore that you gotta look in the mirror and go, 'This is not right. It's not healthy and as good as the relationship could be, if I kept changing myself, I'm never going to be happy in it.' "
"Love Makes Me"
The country-twanged single has Hayes singing about acting a little bit crazy, but it's OK because love made him do it. It seems Hayes didn't have to look far for this song's inspiration.
"[I]do crazy things like totally out of character and out of my comfort zone," Hayes said of falling in love. "Craziest thing I've ever done for love — I don't know if I could remember it, and if I could, I don't know if I'd admit to it. Honestly, write a song 'cause that's really personal because 'Wanted' was really personal. I was like, 'I'm going to go there. I'm gonna talk first person. I'm gonna talk directly to this person,' and I did it."
