James Brown, soul legend, faces an assault charge after allegedly roughing up his wife, Tomi Mae Brown. It is said that she was pushed to the floor during an argument and was admitted to hospital with scratches and bruises.
A spokesman at Aiken County sheriffs office said that he has been charged with criminal domestic violence and will remain in jail until a hearing next week.
Brown is no stranger to controversy. The Godfather of Soul was sentenced to two and a half years for assault in 1988 and ten years later was convicted of a drugs offence. However, he was granted a state pardon by South Carolina, where he resides, in 2003, meaning he was forgiven for past misdemeanours in the eyes of the law.
Tomi Mae, his fourth wife, who it is rumoured split from the star last year is 37 years the junior of the 70 year old Sex Machine singer. Speculation is rife that the argument was sparked by Mrs Brown using up her husbands hairspray without permission, but at present that is unconfirmed.
