Justin Bieber has thrown his support behind a charity single in a bid to help it snag the U.K. Christmas number one, even though he is its main competitor.
The Canadian star is currently leading the way for the end-of-year accolade with his song Love Yourself, but after hearing how close the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS (National Health Service) Choir is to overtaking him with its track A Bridge Over You, Justin encouraged his fans to help out.
"I'm hearing this UK Christmas race is close...but the @Choir_NHS single is for charity. So..." he began on Twitter on Wednesday (23Dec15), before adding: "for 1 week it's ok not to be #1. Let's do the right thing & help them win. It's Christmas. @Choir_NHS good luck".
The 21-year-old then shared a link to the choir's website, where people can purchase the track.
"This is what it's all about," he continued. "Merry Christmas".
The choir is made up of NHS staff from two boroughs in the English capital, including doctors, physios, porters and nurses, and the members are shocked at how tightly fought the battle for Christmas number one has become between them and the international pop star.
"I can't believe we're actually in the charts competing for number one," choir member Liz Steele told BBC Newsbeat on Tuesday (22Dec15).
"We've got some pretty tough competition so to be in this position is amazing... anything could happen."
At the last count, the choir is only 662 sales behind Justin, who is currently holding on to the top spot with Love Yourself, and has a further two tracks in the top 10.
