Justin Bieber, One Direction, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Carly Rae Jepsen and seemingly every other artist currently signed to a recording contract are in the running for the 2013 People's Choice Awards ... though all of them trail Adam Levine, who leads the pack of musicians and actors nominated for the 39th annual show.
Yes, Levine scored six combined nods in the music and television categories — including Favorite Band (Maroon 5), Song ("One More Night") and Album (Overexposed), not to mention Favorite Celebrity Judge and Competition TV Show for his work on NBC's "The Voice" — one more than Bieber and two more than actor Channing Tatum. Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence also picked up three nominations apiece.
In the ample music categories, Bieber dukes it out with Blake Shelton, Chris Brown, Jason Mraz and his mentor, Usher, for Favorite Male Artist, while Adele, Carrie Underwood, Perry, Pink and Taylor Swift face off for Favorite Female. Drake, Flo Rida, Jay-Z, Minaj and Pitbull square off for Favorite Hip Hop Artist, while Levine's Maroon 5 go up against Green Day, Linkin Park, No Doubt and Train in the Favorite Band category.
One Direction are up for three awards, Favorite Breakout Artist (against Jepsen, Fun., Gotye and the Wanted) , Song and Album, and their fanbase — the Directioners — is in the running for Favorite Music Fan Following, an intriguing category that also features Perry's KatyCats, Demi Lovato's Lovatics and both Bieber's Beliebers and Selena Gomez's Selenators (awkward!)
Several PCA-nominated artists, including Swift, One Direction, Pink and Fun. are also set to make appearances at Thursday night's "Restore The Shore" telethon, a benefit to help victims of Hurricane Sandy and rebuild the town of Seaside Heights, New Jersey, which airs live at 11 p.m. ET on MTV.
