Meek Mill Keeps It Street On Dreams And Nightmares

Meek Mill's penchant for dropping street-oriented rap music pre-dates his deal with Maybach Music Group. Once the fiery Philadelphia lyricist linked up with Rick Ross and company, his block-inspired bars were only intensified. If it ain't broke, Meek won't be fixing it, so don't expect him to clean up his act on his upcoming major-label debut Dreams and Nightmares.

"I've been spittin' about the streets and makin' my money, and that's how I'm gonna continue to do it till I can't do it no more," Meek told on the red carpet for the 2012 BET Awards on July 1.

Hard to argue the logic: Over the past two years, the brash rhyme-slinger has delivered two critically acclaimed mixtapes in the form of Dream Chasers and Dream Chasers 2. The former was selected as one of Mixtape Daily's top mixtapes of 2011.

By staying true to himself, Meek Milly has emerged as one of rap's more popular acts, and he didn't have to go pop to do it. His current single "Amen," featuring Drake and Jeremih, has been slowly climbing up the Billboard charts. Still, the catchy tune has drawn the furor of Reverend Jomo K. Johnson of Philly's Open Air Church, who says that with the less than clean "Amen," Meek is using the church to promote sin.

Despite the low-key criticism, Meek is well aware who he is as an artist, and for Dreams and Nightmares, which will be released August 28, he aims to bring his 'hood perspective to an even wider audience. "I ain't have a problem making it this far spittin' to the streets, so I shouldn't have a problem," he said. "I know how to finesse, I know how to talk to other people. You gotta be a chameleon in this game, and I'm fittin' to be a chameleon."
