Metallica has assured Glastonbury ticket holders that they are the perfect booking for Saturday night at this summer's Westcountry event, claiming they can 'trust' the iconic band to deliver a truly show-stopping headline set.
The band were announced as the third and final headliner at this year's Glastonbury Festival yesterday (8 May, 2014) and will top the bill on Saturday night at this year's event. Arcade Fire close the show on Friday, while Kasabian will headline on Sunday night. However, the announcement of Metallica has ruffled feathers among some festival goers, who consider the band too heavy to headline such a huge event with a mainstream audience. Drummer Lars Ulrich claims the band are the perfect booking however, and will pull out all the stops to prove themselves to the fans.
"Trust your friendly neighbourhood Metallica, we’ll put something suitable together," said Ulrich in an interview with Radio One's Zane Lowe. "It's great that, 32 years into our career, we're still able to knock down doors - doors we didn't think were open to us."
He added that accepting the offer from Michael Eavis to play the event didn't take much in the way of deliberation, calling the decision a no-brainer.
"To be honest with you, we didn’t sit around and have a big conversation when the call came," he said. "In Metallica we have a saying called a 'no-brainer'. Headlining Glastonbury is a no-brainer. We didn’t need to sit around thinking about the pros and cons."
The band first hinted at a Glastonbury appearance in October 2013, when Ulrich told MTV of his hopes of playing the festival. It seems Eavis was listening.
"Every year there's probably less chance of us doing it than the previous year, but it just looks like it would be a fun night out," said Ulrich last year. "We've been fortunate enough to play every other festival on this planet numerous times, so Glastonbury is the only one that's eluding us."
"There's such a vibe and it's maybe the most quintessentially English festival. Everybody who goes there loves it and obviously Michael doesn't need our help."
"I completely appreciate and respect that – but if he ever wants to get hold of us we're in the Yellow Pages and ready to go!"
