The Sorcerer’s Apprentice star, who has been dogged by financial problems over the past couple of years, reportedly wants to bring the famous 1960s novel and iconic movie about life in a mental asylum to the stage.
According to reports, Cage will be working on the new production with producers Robert Cole and Fred Zollo, and plans to play Randle Patrick McMurphy – the main character in Ken Kesey's novel played by Jack Nicholson in the 1975 movie.
Broadway columnist for the New York Post Michael Riedel, who revealed the plan, quipped: 'Is this perfect casting or what?'
He added: 'Cage appears to be one of those stars looking to bolster a wobbly film career with a Broadway triumph.”
The play was first produced on Broadway in 1964, two years after the novel was first published, and starred Kirk Douglas as McMurphy, and Gene Wilder as Billy Bibbit.
