Nicole Scherzinger and Lewis Hamilton are reportedly attempting to reconcile.
The former Pussycat Doll is believed to have recently ended the couple's five-year romance following a "furious" phone call about his reluctance to get engaged.
According to UK newspaper The Mirror time apart has strengthen Lewis' resolve.
The 28-year-old Formula One racer is said to be desperate to win her back.
"According to their friends. they didn't really want to split and are now desperately hoping they can make things work again," the outlet reports.
The pair's hectic work schedules are said to be partly to blame for the split.
They are reportedly trying to figure out how to make it work despite constantly being pulled to opposite ends of the globe.
"Both Lewis and Nicole are absolutely gutted, they are so down," an insider said.
"They really struggled to hold down the relationship in the past few months. Now they have spent time as single people, Lewis knows what he wants now and that is to be with Nicole.
"He is so in love with her and those close to them have no doubt that they will get married in the not too distant future if they can work through their hectic work commitments."
Lewis opened up about the break-up to Sky News last week. When asked about his race team's standings he admitted he felt distracted due to personal issues.
"I'm trying my hardest to be positive, but I'm going through a really, really tough time at the moment with the loss of someone really, really special in my life. My world's turned upside down," he admitted.
"But I have a job to motivate my team... So I'm really trying to pull myself together and keep my head up, but it's so hard to do."
