For the last month, the British press has been buzzing about the arrest of an unnamed 82-year-old entertainer in conjunction with the sex abuse investigation involving the late TV host Jimmy Saville.
On Friday, the Sun finally named the arrested man as singer and host Rolf Harris whose career has spanned over six decades.
The arrest is said to now not be a part of the Saville case. The police first raided his house last November while Harris was not home. Their investigation continued for the next four months until an arrest was made on March 28. At the time, all that Scotland Yard said was "An 82-year-old man from Berkshire was arrested by officers on Operation Yewtree on suspicion of sexual offences. He has been bailed to a date in May pending further enquiries. The individual falls under the strand of the investigation we have termed 'others'."
Since that arrest, social media has leaned toward Harris as the person arrested but it wasn't until today that it was confirmed.
Harris is vehemently denying the allegations.
Rolf has had a long and varied career in entertainment. Internationally, his biggest hit as a singer was 1960's Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport which peaked at 3 in the U.S., 9 in the U.K. and 1 in Australia, his home country. He also had hits with Sun Arise (1961/#3 U.K.), Two Little Boys (1969/#1 U.K./#1 Australia) and a version of Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven (1993/#7 U.K.).
Harris has been a staple of British television since 1963 from variety shows to programs on art including one where he painted a portrait of the Queen.
