Taylor Swift is allowing herself to fall again in her latest Red single, "Begin Again." The track, which she released in full late Monday night, follows the singer as she meets a new guy who allows her to be the person the other guy didn't.
She opens the slow-motion country ballad with the lines, "Take a deep breath in the mirror/ He didn't like it when I wore high heels, but I do/ Turn the lock and put my headphones on/ He always said he didn't get this song but I do, I do/ Walked in expecting you'd be late but you got here early and you stand and wait/ I walk to you/ You pulled my chair out and helped me in, and you don't know how nice that is but I do." During the track, Swift makes reference to their shared love for James Taylor and how shy her new guy is. The chorus sums up the sappy, we're-just-falling-for-each-other sentiment of the track: "And you throw your head back laughing like a little kid/ I think it's strange that you think I'm funny 'cause he never did/ I've been spending the last eight months thinking all love ever does is break, and burn, and end/ But on a Wednesday, in a café, I watched it begin again."
While it's hard to gauge whom the song might be about, she does make reference to this guy's strong ties to his family, perhaps giving some clues. "And we walk down the block to my car and I almost brought him up," she sings later on. "But you start to talk about the movies that your family watches every single Christmas/ And I will talk about that for the first time/ What's past is past."
Swift will release three more tracks ahead of Red's October 22 release. "It's actually a song about kind of when you've gotten through a really bad relationship and you finally dust yourself off and go on that first date after a horrible breakup," she said during "GMA" about "Begin Again." "And the vulnerability that goes along with all of that."
The songs, in addition to the record-breaking, chart-topping lead single "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," (which is seated at #2 on the Hot 100 after three weeks at #1) are giving fans an idea of what this latest studio release from the singer is shaping up to sound like.
