Taylor Swift teased fans on Monday (September 24) with her new song, "Begin Again," off her October 22 album release, Red. The new tune, which will officially drop Tuesday, finds Swift's songwriting feet planted firmly in familiar territory.
"It's actually a song about kind of when you've gotten through a really bad relationship and you finally dust yourself off and go on that first day after a horrible breakup and the vulnerability that goes along with all of that," she shared about the song when she premiered the teaser on "Good Morning America."
The slower-tempo breakup track has the singer comparing her new beau with her old flame when she sings, "I think it's strange that you think I'm funny 'cause he never did." The singer goes back to Nashville on this track, and its jangly guitars certainly are more country than pop following her glittery foray into pop with the album's lead single, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together."
Thanks to "WANEGBT," Swift has already nabbed some pre-release success. The Max Martin-produced single became an instant hit for the singer when it skyrocketed to #1 on the Hot 100 chart. And, after spending three weeks at the top, it became the longest running country song on the Hot 100 in nearly 32 years. She's currently at #2 with the song, getting beat out by Maroon 5's "One More Night."
Both songs, the sassy "WANEGBT" and her just-released, more positive-leaning "Begin Again," show the many sides of her relationship with relationships.
"Well, in terms of my album, it kind of signifies the intense, really bold emotions you feel when you're in kind of mad love," she told earlier this month about Red, which is set for release on October 22. "And I think that all of the songs on the album are written about those kinds of experiences that I've had."
"Each song stands on its own musically, sonically and emotionally too. It's kind of a patchwork quilt of all these different styles that have influenced me in one way or another," she later added.
