Tens of millions of viewers watched as the Dirrty singer got the fourth line of the song wrong.
Multiple Grammy-award winner Aguilera, 30, sang: 'Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, what so proudly we watched at the twilight's last gleaming.'
The correct lyrics are: 'Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming.'
She then tried to cover up her mistake by adding some vocal flourishes of her own.
Her mistake immediately caused fans to take to Twitter to complain.
'RIP to the Star Spangled Banner (1931- 2011): butchered today by Christina Aguilera in front of millions at Super Bowl XLV,' wrote fan Bo Harmon, the New York Post reported.
'Star Spangled Banner: The Remix by Christina Aguilera. (lyrics sold separately),' wrote another.
Before Sunday's Green Bay Packers vs Pittsburgh Steelers showdown Aguilera said. 'I have been performing the anthem since I was seven years old and I must say the Super Bowl is a dream come true. I am really excited to be part of such an iconic event.'
