The 38-year-old has two children - Apple, six, and Moses, four - with husband Chris Martin, frontman of British band Coldplay.
Speaking about her own childhood with actress mum Blythe Danner and director dad Bruce Paltrow, she said: 'I was raised by people who were very focused on the family and the importance of family and the idea that that's where you get real richness in life and that success is great, but it's kind of an illusion.'
She added to UK newspaper The Sun: 'Real life is when your kid is at the table making a joke about their butt and you're laughing - that's the best thing about life, that human interaction and connection.
'So I think luckily because of my parents my priorities are there and I think that's how you sustain relationships.'
