Joel Madden: I had to woo wife hard

Joel Madden confesses he's "not for every woman".

The Good Charlotte rocker is currently married to 31-year-old fashion designer Nicole Richie. The pair share two children, five-year-old Harlow and three-year-old Sparrow.

Joel used a very specific approach to get Nicole to pay attention to him in the early days of their relationship.

"I am not for every woman," Joel revealed during an interview with Australia's 60 Minutes news programme.

"Obviously, the first thing is, 'What does your guy look like?' I am not the tall, dark, handsome guy. But it's when you get to know me, like how I got Nicole."

Joel is happy his charms are so effective.

He was able to win the love of his life's heart.

"When I would first see her around, we were friends, I was like, 'Just give me a shot! Just give me a shot. One date.' [I thought], if I get my foot in the door," Joel detailed.

"That's how it has always been with girls. I have never been the obvious [choice].

"But once they give me one date, you know, I do the song and dance. That's how it was with my wife."

Joel and Nicole married on December 11 2010.

Joel cherishes his marriage with Nicole and revealed the depth of his love for his wife in December just before the holidays.

"Special dedication to my wife," he posted on his Tumblr account.

"We just spent a few days off the grid celebrating our second wedding anniversary.

"Sometimes I keep it to myself and sometimes I can't help myself and I gotta tell the whole world how much I love her. This is one of those times... I feel like the luckiest man alive to have my wife and kids. When the world outside breaks me down, they build me back up. Hope everyone out there finds this kind of love."
