The Social 50 ranks the most active artists on the world's leading social networking sites -- YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and iLike -- using a formula blending weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with weekly artist page views and weekly song plays.
Rock band the Script makes its debut at No. 41. While on a world tour, they stopped by NBC's "Today Show" on June 10 to promote their latest album "Science & Faith." This appearance, as well as iTunes selecting their release for a "Great Albums of 2011" sale, contributed to an 80% increase in overall week-to-week views. In July and August, residents of Ireland and the UK will may get a chance to see The Script play live, as the band finished its tour.
Another notable entry (No. 48) comes with Skrillex, an LA-based house/dubstep producer and former frontman of the rockband From First To Last. In releasing a remix of the song "Cinema" by Italian DJ and electronic house producer Benny Bennassi (June 9), the act earned 91,000 YouTube views, respectively (a 181% week-to-week increase). On June 21, Skrillex will be releasing a seven song EP titled "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites."
Rapper Pitbull breaks into the Social 50 top ten, moving 15-8 with a 160% explosion in YouTube views. On June 6, he premiered the single "Rain Over Me" featuring Latin star Marc Anthony, which has since gained 118,000 YouTube views. The following week, the song was also featured on a promotion on the song identification service SoundHound.
