The Hollywood star appeared at New York's famed 92nd Street Y arts venue for an evening where he was interviewed about art.
But audience members complained about it being too boring - and event bosses emailed all 900 ticket-holders offering full refunds.
'We acknowledge that last night's event with Steve Martin did not meet the standard of excellence that you have come to expect,' wrote Sol Adler, the Y's executive director, in an email to ticket buyers.
'We planned for a more comprehensive discussion and we, too, were disappointed with the evening.
'We will be mailing you a $50 certificate for each ticket you purchased to last night's event.'
The centre's spokeswoman Beverly Greenfield insists that 'the evening with Martin and Solomon just didn't gel'.
