According to the Los Angeles Times, the triple Oscar nominee was chosen Sunday by director Zack Snyder for the role opposite Henry Cavill, the British actor hand-picked to play Superman.
'There was a big, giant search for Lois,' Snyder told the paper. 'We did a lot of auditioning, but we had this meeting with Amy Adams, and after that I just felt she was perfect for it.'
Snyder added that both Lane and the Clark Kent-Superman character would be highly relevant to modern audiences.
'What's important to us is making him relevant and real and making him empathetic to today's audience so that we understand the decisions he makes,' Snyder said. 'That applies to Lois as well.'
The upcoming Superman: Man of Steel is expected to hit theaters in December 2012. Kevin Costner and Diane Lane have been cast to play the Kents, the adoptive earth parents of the last survivor of the planet Krypton.
