Big Sean did justice to his Finally Famous series, topping off the mixtapes with a memorable debut album, and now, the Detroit rapper is working up to his sophomore opus Hall of Fame: Memoirs of a Detroit Player. He's dedicating the first official single, "Guap," to fans who understand the grind all too well.
"It's just a fun song and it's crazy because I originally didn't want that to be the very first single, but when it came down to it, it just seemed like the perfect time," Big Sean tells MTV News of the track, complete with Kanye West on the hook. "Sometimes life be so goddamn serious, you just need them songs to get away from it, turn up to and just feel good to."
A few weeks back, Sean explained that he wanted his first single to be something "inspiring" and "emotional," and while "Guap" doesn't exactly fit into that category, the G.O.O.D. Music rapper hopes fans can appreciate the feel-good aspect of the track.
"I feel like 'Guap' is inspirational in the sense that it's for anybody who's ever had to clock in, for anybody who got that check," he explained. "I used to be a telemarketer, I used to have to get that $140 check every week and I'd be happy as hell. So it's just that feeling, it's that moment, and if you listen to the verses, everything in there is just too real."
"But for all those people who need that 'real inspirational rap,' we got that too," he added laughing. Hall Of Fame is currently set to debut on December 18, following Sean's recent Detroit mixtape which he calls "a sample" of what's to come.
The new album will find him continuing his work with producers like No I.D., Kanye West, plus Young Chop and Key Wane, who produced "Guap." "I'm excited about the whole project, I think it's gonna be one of the best hip-hop albums, period," he said. "I've got the best people working with me."
