Big Sean 'Really' Wants That Grammy For G.O.O.D. Music Crew

Lord have "Mercy." You know you've transcended the culture when reality TV regular and social-media star Kim Kardashian is combing your tracks to caption her tweets. And no one knows that better than Big Sean, who's up for his first-ever Grammy nods off the success of the Cruel Summer smash.

On Sunday night, Sean will share trophies with G.O.O.D. Music captain Kanye West, as well as Pusha T and 2 Chainz if the rap collective racks up W's for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance. And while "Mercy" helped usher the Detroit MC into an exclusive club that includes hip-hop luminaries like Nas, according to Sean, it was only a matter of time before he got his membership.

"I knew it would come; you just never know when," he said when MTV News' Sway caught up with him on the VIBE Media red carpet Friday in Los Angeles. "I figure, Sway, I put out one album and I'm 24 years old, and I knew it was gonna come sooner or later," the Finally Famous rapper explained before adding a hilariously double-entendre-conscious "pause." "So I'm just happy that it came so early — pause.

The inescapable "Mercy" dominated 2012 by assembling an all-star group of MCs who seemed intent on packing into it as many unstoppable quotables and ad libs as possible, not to mention that five-alarm Fuzzy Jones sample. Not only was it MTV's #7 Best Song of 2012, but the stunt-heavy, double-platinum track also made itself comfortable on Billboard's Hot 100, Rap Songs and R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts for several weeks, beginning last April.

So, yes, Big Sean "really" wants those awards. But he sounded measured about the possible outcomes; the Grammys are known for their unpredictability, after all. And coming from the hard-scrabble D, the rising rap star, sporting a dapper tuxedo shirt and deep side part, had things in perspective.

"If I don't get it, it's all good — we all winning in life anyway," he said. "I got my family out here. Coming from where I come from, you know what it's like."

It's all G.O.O.D., indeed.
