The 59 year-old said his bosses thought his name sounded too unusual and wanted him to go for something more American but he didn't follow their advice.
He said to UK newspaper Daily Record: 'My manager got my first job with the Screen Actors Guild and thought about changing my name. I took so much crap for that name Hasselhoff at school I decided not to change it.
'I said to my dad: 'I'm going to make this name famous.' Even though at one point they wanted to make me David Michael. But that was boring.
'Another time, they also wanted me to change my first name to Eric so it sounded more authentic.'
