On the same day that his album "Recovery" was named 2010's best-selling LP, Eminem topped the music categories at the 2011 People's Choice Awards, earning four trophies during the ceremony Wednesday night (Jan. 5). While the rapper won the favorite male artist award, Katy Perry beat out Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift and took home the favorite female artist trophy.
"I just want to say thank you to all the fans, of course, because this is an awards show that is voted by people, not just... you know... something else, a computer," Perry said while accepting the favorite female artist award during the ceremony at Los Angeles' Nokia Theater. The singer, who performed a restrained version of her Hot 100-topping "Firework" during the show, told her fans that she'll see them next summer during her California Dreams tour in the U.S.
Along with being named favorite male artist and favorite hip-hop artist, Eminem won the favorite song and favorite music video categories, both for his Rihanna collaboration "Love the Way You Lie." Rihanna also scored the favorite pop artist trophy, while Paramore, Usher and Swift were named the favorite artists for rock, R&B and country.
In somewhat of an upset, Selena Gomez & the Scene beat out Justin Bieber, Ke$ha and Bruno Mars for the favorite breakout artist award. The group also performed its single "A Year Without Rain" at the ceremony, while Kid Rock played his track "God Bless Saturday."
In the non-music categories, "Glee" was named favorite TV comedy, and "American Idol" took home favorite competition show. Host Queen Latifah opened the show by performing a spirited riff on Taio Cruz's "Dynamite," complete with backup dancers and synchronized fist-pumping from the crowd.
